Asphalt Resurfacing and Reconstruction

(Roanoke, VA)—The 15-mile section of the Blue Ridge Parkway between US Route 220, milepost (MP) 121 and MP 136 is scheduled for asphalt resurfacing and reconstruction. Asphalt reconstruction will include deep patching, milling, and resurfacing to begin at MP 127 and will proceed southward toward MP 136. The 2008 construction season will begin June 16, 2008, and end on December 15, 2008. The project will be temporarily discontinued during the month of October when visitation on the Parkway is busiest. Motorists should expect delays and encounter flagmen traveling north or south on the Parkway during construction as the project will be completed under one-lane traffic control during the entire project duration. One lane closure using traffic barriers, signs, and flagmen will also occur during the 2008 season on the Parkway bridge over US Route 220, to repaint the bridge metal railing.

There are nine overlook parking areas within this section of the Parkway that will be intermittingly and alternately closed for asphalt pavement reconstruction. Reconstruction of the Parkway overlooks may occur throughout the winter months from December 2008, to March 2009, when asphalt paving reconstruction is discontinued on the Parkway motor road. Asphalt paving reconstruction on the motor road will continue beginning April 1, 2009 and will continue through the 2009 construction season.

Beginning the week of June 16th, concrete jersey barriers will be placed on the Glade Creek Bridge, located at MP 107.45, so that the bridge railing can be sand blasted and recoated. The bridge will be open only for one-lane access and it is estimated that this work will be completed by August 1, 2008. Signs are in place to reduce the speed limit approach to the bridge from 45 mph to 25 mph, and then to 10 mph over the bridge where one lane closure by flagmen control, will be in place. We ask motorists to please pay close attention to flagmen directions and speed limit signs during these projects and we would appreciate your traffic awareness and courtesy. Flagmen will do their best to minimize delays during these very important reconstruction projects for the Blue Ridge Parkway.
