A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Wintergreen
By: Marshall Faintich
The Wintergreen area is the 15-mile long Rockfish River Valley and the surrounding mountains in Nelson County, Virginia, located about 30 miles southwest of Charlottesville. This area includes the Wintergreen Resort community, the Rockfish Valley Trail, the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch, and the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Rockfish Valley Trail is part of the Thomas Jefferson Loop of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail system. Reliable birders have documented more than 200 species of birds in the area, and this 336 page guide has photographs of almost all of them, along with details about when and where to look for them. This book features the finest images of the Parkway by photography team Pat and Chuck Blackley, from grand scenics of the Peaks of Otter to close-ups of delicat trillium.
When the Parkway Came
A letter written by a mountain farmer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Depressions years of the 1930s inspired this story. The book tells how the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway affected one family - including eight year-old Jess and his sister Maggie - whose farm lay in its path. This book is ideal for children.

The Blue Ridge Parkway by Foot
A Park Ranger's Memoir
Author: Tim Pegram
One of the premier tourist attractions of the eastern United States, the Blue Ridge Parkway stretches from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in western North Carolina. This volume relates the author's one-of-a-kind backpacking trip along the 469-mile road, along with his observations and recollections regarding the Parkway, the most visited unit of the National Park Service. Beginning with his experience as a summer college intern, the book also covers the twelve years he spent working as a ranger on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Anecdotal history and accounts from some of the Parkway's earliest rangers complete this tale of one of our country's national treasures. The appendix contains a chronological, mile-by-mile re-creation of Pegram's 2003 trek, including the names of all the Parkway landmarks mentioned in the book.
Building the Blue Ridge Parkway
Author: Karen J. Hall
Published by Arcadia Publishing
The Blue Ridge Parkway began as a dream in the late 1800s and became reality in 1987 when the 469-mile scenic highway was completed. Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began in September 1935 at Cumberland Knob. Heavy construction was done by contractors who won bids for the different projects along various sections of the Parkway. Civilian Conservation Corps troops took care of the roadsides, landscaping, and structure building. As part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, this project was intended to provide jobs throughout the region.
